Our Approach to Teen Therapy
Teens need a safe space where they can express themselves without fear of judgment. Our therapists use evidence-based techniques to help adolescents develop confidence, emotional awareness, and effective communication skills.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – Helps reframe negative thought patterns and build confidence
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for Teens – Teaches emotional regulation and stress management
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) – Encourages self-acceptance and resilience
Mindfulness-Based Strategies – Helps reduce anxiety and improve focus
Our sessions are designed to meet teens where they are, we have experience working with and addressing their mental health challenges in a way that feels relatable and empowering.

We understand that parents want to help their teens, but communication can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. Our therapists work closely with families so you don't feel like new clients, but together we help to create a supportive home environment.

We offer teen & adolescent therapy for individuals aged 13 to 18. For families searching for child therapy for an older child or teen, our clinicians help determine whether individual therapy, family support, or another service is the best fit.
Our services cover anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, family conflict, peer pressure, emotional regulation challenges, trauma, identity issues, school stress, and more. We help teens develop tools, strengthen emotional strength, build confidence, and learn coping strategies that support mental health and day-to-day functioning.
We use evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and mindfulness techniques, and family systems perspectives when appropriate. These approaches support the therapeutic process of strengthening self-esteem, managing emotions, and promoting healthy coping skills.
We offer family involvement and parent coaching to help improve communication, resolve conflicts, and create a supportive home environment. Therapy is often a collaborative process, especially when a child struggling with emotional, social, or behavioural challenges needs support across home, school, and other important parts of life.
The adolescent years can bring major emotional, social, developmental, and academic changes that impact a teen’s mental health. Through therapy for teens, we help young people explore their feelings, build resilience, and develop healthy ways of coping with stress. Our clinicians focus on each teen’s unique needs, including child development, identity development, emotional strength, and the skills needed to solve problems in healthier ways. By guiding teens through the therapeutic process, we aim to prepare teens for meaningful change and help them become their best selves.
At Forest Psychological Clinic, we understand that a teen’s struggles are often connected to the larger picture of their family dynamics and family systems.. That’s why our therapists may recommend family therapy sessions in addition to individual support. Working with a licensed family therapist can improve communication, strengthen relationships, and help parents and teens develop new coping strategies together. Addressing challenges in the home environment is often a key part of the therapeutic approach, especially when teens are going through difficult times such as school stress, social pressures, or identity changes.
During the first session, we focus on providing compassionate support while getting to know your teen, your concerns, and what has been happening at home, school, or socially. This appointment helps us understand whether individual therapy teen therapy, parent coaching, or another approach may be the best next step. The goal is to create a safe starting point where teens and families can begin to solve problems, build trust, and move forward with clearer support.

Every teen comes to therapy with their own story, so the best approach depends on what they are experiencing, how long it has been happening, and how those challenges are affecting daily life. Some teens benefit most from one-on-one therapy, where they can speak openly with a clinician, explore their emotions, and develop tools for managing stress, anxiety, low mood, school pressure, identity development, or relationship challenges. This can be especially helpful when a teen needs a private space to reflect, build emotional strength, and learn healthier ways to problem solve.
In other situations, therapy may also involve parents or caregivers. When a child struggling with stress, family conflict, avoidance, big emotions, or communication difficulties is also feeling misunderstood at home, caregiver involvement can be an important part of the process. Our clinicians may use a family systems lens to better understand how patterns at home, school, and in relationships may be contributing to the teen’s concerns. This does not mean blaming parents or teens. It means looking at the whole picture so support can feel more practical and connected to real life.
For some families, child therapy or teen therapy may include parent coaching, caregiver check-ins, or joint sessions alongside individual support. This collaborative process helps everyone work toward the same goals, whether that means improving communication, reducing conflict, building trust, or helping parents respond in ways that support their teen’s growth. When appropriate, our clinicians may also draw from attachment theory to better understand connection, safety, independence, and how teens relate to important people in their lives.
We also tailor support to each teen’s stage of child development. A 13-year-old and an 18-year-old may both need support, but they are often facing very different pressures. Younger teens may need help naming feelings, understanding reactions, or building confidence at school and home. Older teens may be working through identity, independence, friendships, academic pressure, future planning, or more complex emotional concerns. Depending on the teen’s needs, therapy may also include practical skills such as mindfulness, communication strategies, coping skills, or DBT skills that help them pause, respond, and make choices that better support their well being.
During the first visit, we take time to understand your teen’s concerns, your family’s goals, and what kind of support may be the best fit. We are committed to providing compassionate care that respects both the teen’s need for privacy and the family’s need for guidance. The goal is to help teens prepare for meaningful change by helping them build insight, confidence, emotional strength, and practical skills they can carry into school, relationships, and adulthood.

We provide a safe space where you can find peace within yourself. Our expert therapists guide you through overcoming mental challenges with personalized care.
